Importing a vehicle from Japan
Japan is the heart of the JDM import scene. The route depends on the vehicle's age: 25-plus years is the simplest path, while newer vehicles need a registered importer to certify conformity.
Check the 25-year rule
Vehicles 25 model-years or older are exempt from FMVSS conformity — the simplest import. Newer JDM vehicles must go through a registered importer.
Shipping & customs
Most Japanese exports ship RoRo or containerized. A customs broker files the CBP entry; the export certificate and de-registration documents travel with the car.
Conformity for newer vehicles
If the vehicle is under 25 years, a registered importer certifies FMVSS conformity, handles EPA/DOT, posts the bond, and files for release.
